We offer two types finishes for our furniture; danish oils and a water-based varnish. Both are safe and natural.
Danish Oil: This is one of the oldest furniture finishes and also environmentally friendly. Danish oil cures to a hard satin finish that resists liquid well. It is soft to the touch and brings out the natural color, warmth, and characteristics of the wood.
Maintenance of this product is straight forward. For everyday cleaning, use a mild soap and water on a cloth to wipe up after meals and daily spills. The danish oil will dissipate over time and usage so it does need reapplication about every few months.
Step 1) simply wipe down the table with mineral spirits to remove dirt and grime.
Step 2) apply danish oil with a lint free rag liberally.
Step 3) after about 20min wipe excess oil and buff lightly.
A second coat can be applied after about 8-10 hours. Additional buffing will enhance look. For more soiled area, or even if you havre nicks, scratches, gouges, etc., you can take a high grit sand paper 180 or higher, or even a fine steel wool pad and lightly sand the damaged area until smooth to the touch. Then reapply the danish oil with steps above and your table will be glowing like new and ready for entertaining.
Water-based Varnish: This is a more durable product. Hard and strong against scratches and dings, this finish is similar to what you will find in most furniture stores, yet it is much safer for the environment.
Maintenance of this product is minimal. For everyday cleaning, use a mild soap and water on a cloth to wipe up after meals and daily spills. We prefer non-toxic products such as Murphy’s Oil (orange bottle). Do your best to stay away from toxic and aggressive cleaners as they will dull the finish; so look for 'natural' cleaners. Your varnished table can last 10-20 years if in a safe environment...so enjoy!!
